Gartner: Smartphones outsold feature phones for the first time ever in Q2 2022

Remember when IDC published some data back in April saying smartphones outsold feature phones for the first time ever in Q1 2022? Gartner didn't believe that actually happened. If you look at the 2nd quarter, however, then they inverse their minds.

Who is on top? Samsung, of course, with 71 1000000 units shipped, giving them a hair over 31% of the market place. In next place is Apple, with slightly over xiv% of the market. Players 3 to five (LG, Lenovo, ZTE) each sold around ten million units, giving them roughly 5% of the market place a pop. What's funny is that 10 million units was Apple'due south goal was in 2008 for the iPhone. And as for "others", the companies that are either emerging (Coolpad) or were once relevant (Motorola, BlackBerry, Nokia), eats upwardly a staggering twoscore% of the market.

Should any of this be of surprise to you lot? Not really. It wasn't that long ago when a decent characteristic phone cost upwards of $150 to even $200. Smartphones now fit in that price category. And as smartphones become cheaper and cheaper, pretty soon feature phones volition die out. There's nonetheless a place in this earth for dumb phones that only call and text and last more two weeks on a single charge, but it's rapidly shrinking.
